The AA battery is the most used battery in all the world and can be found on hundreds of thousands of devices. IEC codes for AA batteries include the popular LR6 for AA alkaline batteries and HR6 for rechargeable NiMH batteries. The normal voltage for these batteries is 1.5V, although rechargeable batteries are generally 1.2V. The new AA batteries have a much higher capacity at a lower price. Introduced in 1907, the size of the AA battery was standardized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1947, but it was used in international and new electrical systems during its time before formal standardization. The nomenclature of ANSI and IEC batteries varies in designation for this type of cell, depending on the cell and chemical characteristics.
Each AA battery has a length of 51mm and a diameter of 14mm. The formats in which the AA battery is available are its, alkaline batteries, salt batteries, long-lasting and rechargeable batteries of different capacities.
AA alkaline batteries last for 6 years, but the equivalents of AA batteries last for 9 years before use. The rechargeable AA batteries are now available in NiMH with capacities of up to 2850mAh and are also available in the new "pre-charged" technology that allows them to be used, directly from the package.
